Istanbul – Back Home

A little outing today up to the Topkapi Palace, which is closed so I end up by the Basilla Cistern – no queues so I will have a look in there.

It’s cavernous. This huge underground cathedral with its hundreds of columns and brick roof is filled with water a couple of feet deep. The suspended walkway goes through the columns and covers all the nooks and crannies. In the water, fish are living, obviously no daylight but they must be fed. There are two Medusa heads at the base of two separate columns, one face is lying on its side and the other is set upside down. Not sure of the significance of this unless it’s to do with the Greek Mythology about this one sister of the three great Gorgon sisters. She’ll turn you to stone if you look directly at her, so maybe that’s why they are strategically positioned.

It’s been a good break and Istanbul has a lot to offer, after all it kept the Fatman busy for five days and did feel like a whole week.

I do so need to share my adventures with someone. Will I meet them, or is fate too cruel.
